Genesis Behavioral Services, Inc. Detox Facility

25,000 square-foot secure health care detoxification facility. This is a 65-bed Community-Based Residential Facility ("CBRF") that provides substance abuse treatment services. The facility was constructed by Everbest on a turn-key basis, from site selection to complete construction. It had to be built in compliance with extensive and rigorous government regulations pertaining to regulated healthcare buildings.

KK & Becher Gas Station/Convenience Store

Layton Petro Mart, LLC

The design goal for Layton Petro Mart was to change the general perception of the gas station/convenience store, one which is normally seen as two different entities, often incompatible. The melding of the two as a service oriented use is achieved through the unique roof design, covering both functions and utilizing large curved beams to unify these uses. The new spatial experience is further enhanced by the soft translucent roof. The large curved roof is the signature for the building, unique, visible from afar, and readily imageable. From outside to inside, the roof changes material from the translucent, light roof to a 6 inch spacing of exposed and rich tongue and groove wood which is both structural and aesthetically warm. The skew of the pumps contrast pleasantly with the tartan grid of the station's plan and generates a fluid vehicular movement in and out of the facility. The curvature works in plan, section, and elevation thereby creating a consistent aesthetic motif, no different than Ravel's Bolero. Most station canopies are variations of the "mushroom" precedent of the 50's, a station which with two to four pumps is an extinct typology. Today's stations of 12 to 16 pumps have become heavy and dark when connecting roof to canopy. Breaking away from this precedent is attributable to a visionary client, willing to analyze the shortcomings of the existing predominant typology and re-arranging the architectural components to see the value in good design. The lightweight contemporary material provides weather protection, good light, and is easily erected. The performance in high wind, snow, and its self cleaning surface are perfectly suited to the large expanse it covers. At night the station transforms into a beacon of light. The transparency of the walls and the glow of the roof create a presence which communicates a sense of security for the station as well as being a sentry for the neighborhood area and a gateway to the city.
